Recurring system freezes upon network activity, possible data loss

Memory test results attached (sorry for the bad picture - not easy to take one with a glossy display and a G1 mobile... ;)

This is my experience as well. Ubuntu Studio x64 Jaunty -- Fresh install -- Was able to, luckily, get all updates so far -- No other issues.

I'll add that my network is wired. Disabling networking stabilizes the system, while re-enabling networking brings freezes on again. Any degree of network activity may cause a complete freeze. REISUB also has no effect.

I'll add my logs below (hopefully without a hard reset and booting into Windows).

I've also added my daemon log as it seemed that there may be something of interest in there. Also please realize that I was disabling and re-enabling my networking so as not to experience freezes while gathering logs and such. I also waited to see if there would be a freeze after the latest updates, and there was. Additionally, it seems that I experience freezing more often than does Marc, the original bug reporter. I'm surprised that I haven't had a freeze while uploading my logs, in fact.

Same freeze with following hard- and software here:
GA-K8VT800 (Pro) motherboard with VIA K8T800 Chipset
 CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 2800+
 Graphic: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
 Network: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8029 (no wireless)
 Fresh Ubuntu Jaunty, Kubuntu and furthermore Ubuntu Studio installed. Freezes with both kernels.

In contrary to the original poster REISUB is working.
Changing network driver of ATI card and Kernel to version 2.6.30rc doesn't help.

I have downgraded to kernel 2.6.27 and there isn't any freeze since 5 days now!

I would like to test a 2.6.27 kernel to add information to the bug. Being relatively new to Ubuntu, could you please point me to a documentation about downgrading the kernel? Will I have to compile a "vanilla" kernel to do so?

I stress-tested my system with the external WiFi adapter for nearly 24 hours now, transferred some 6 GiB via WiFi. Listened to Shoutcast radio via Songbird. Downloaded and provided Ubuntu images via Transmission. Copied disk images from local systems. Jaunty is rock-solid. So I think I can pinpoint *my* problems to the "iwlagn" driver.

System froze again, but took some serious beating before it died. Sure enough it froze when I left tty1, so I do not have a picture of the kernel panic.

Attached you will find the last words of the kernel. The kernel talked about problems with "iwlagn" and the microcode.

I just want to add that I couldn't keep playing with this. I gots to gets my work done sometime ;) I've installed Linux Mint 6 x64 (Ubuntu 8.10) with the 2.6.27-14-generic kernel and I'm running great.

sorry for answering late. To compile the Kernel for Jaunty follow the advice on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=311158 (Master Kernel Thread) and replace all occurence of string 2.6.29 by 2.6.27.

I'm now 10 days without any freeze (even under absolute heavy load)!

Does anyone know if upgrading to the latest kernel would help?

I'm having the same problem on a Vaio Z750. It's a 64 bit, dual core with a fresh install of Jaunty (several fresh installs over the last few days). It locks up and and the leds flash. I can't do anything, even with REISUB or the off switch. The only way to get out is to unplug the laptop and remove the battery.

When I try to boot up again, this is the last and first things in the kernel log:

Whether I can fix the partition with fsck or have to boot to the installation disk, my user directory is gone.

Whether I go to a later or an earlier kernel, do I have to reinstall Ubunty, then change the kernel?

I have this problem on an ASUS G71. I'm convinced that it is a wireless issue, because if I disable the wireless using the switch on the side of the laptop, everything is rock solid. Enable the wireless and the laptop freezes within 5 minutes to 2 hours.

Upgrade to 2.6.30 kernel using http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ appears to have fixed the freezing issue.

I have the same problem here, Sony Vaio SR49VN, intel centrino 2 2,66 GHz, 4 gb ram, intel wifi 5100. Kubuntu jaunty 64 bit
randomly freeze with kernel 2.6.28-11 and 2.6.28-13 when using wifi. It randomly takes from 5 mins to 5 hours to freeze, but turning wifi off stop the freezes.

after inspecting the kernel log this is the recurring pattern before the freeze:

hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 15000 nsec
hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 35000 nsec
....

and so on

I started to happen to me too, sometimes I saw an error related to microcode SW error, but not always. How could I help debugging this?

Hi Marc,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 375986

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.
