I'm on Ubuntu Karmic Koala, which comes with Empathy preinstalled instead of pidgin/gaim. So the second paragraph there should perhaps mention Empathy as a possibility, or XChat.
I believe that in Empathy the steps to get on #ubuntu would be:
* Ensure you have the telepathy-idle package installed
* Start Empathy
* In the Accounts wizard (or, using Edit: Accounts) create an IRC account for the server irc.freenode.net, with your preferred nickname
* From the Contact List window, choose Room ▸ Join
* From the Account drop-down list, select the Freenode IRC account
* In the Room text box, type #ubuntu
* Click Join to enter the room

Can not simply replace Pidgin with Empathy -- we still have Pidgin on supported Ubuntu releases.
