Bug Description

At the moment, tapping anywhere in terminal window makes it produce a Tab keypress, which is handy for invoking bash autocompletion.

The only way to use the Esc key is predefined "FNS" additional virtual keyboard layout, and it is not so convinient, as you often need CTRL+C key which located in different layout "CTRL".

I wish I could enter both Tab and Esc key by tapping on different portions of a terminal window: the upper left corner (or quarter) shold produce Esc keypresses and the rest of a window - Tab keypresses.

This will make vi-style interfaces much more usable, including vim editor and bash vi mode (activated by set -o vi).
In turn, bash vi mode gives alternative and convinient way to access command history, which is crucial for terminal usability.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-terminal-app/+bug/1520423 is a similar bug, but personally I think they're distinct enough to warrant keeping them as two separate bugs (this one requests additional behaviour)

Personally I like the idea; and I marked this as affecting ubuntu-ux so the UX guys can take a look at it before we do anything crazy
