Bug Description

Right now whenever I need to pick a SIM card somewhere it says "SIM 1" and "SIM 2". That means I need to look up what the respective cards are on a regular basis to be sure which is which - there's no way I will remember this, not to mention when traveling I change cards and it's paramount for me to know what card is in there and not accidentally use the wrong one.

SIM switchers should display the names of the carriers rather than mere numbers.

You can give a name to the SIMs in the settings, did you try to do that?

That I did not know. That's a nice work-around then until it works out of the box.

settings is a configuration UI, what do you expect us to provide more? "out of the box" is not a setting thing, configuration is...

It would be nice if the configuration UI allowed to set names to the SIMs (as it does now), but had also a useful default name in case the user doesn't change the name.

Apologies for this, I didn't fully understand the situation. So apparently all of the apps involved read gsettings¹ to get the SIM names and there's no changes required.
Ofono should establish default names.

I specced that the SIM ID include the phone number if there is one, otherwise the IMSI. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Networking#sim-id>

However, some of the current display points for the SIM ID may not have enough space to do that, particularly the switcher in the Phone and Messages apps. <https://goo.gl/vn5wY6>

Using the carrier would work as long as your SIMs are from different carriers. I don't know how often that's true.
