Bug Description

On the Aquaris E4.5 (ubuntu 14.10 r21, Utopic Unicorn dev, armhf 20150410-232623), I've noticed the following:

- the "Rotation locked" icon appears as "phone which can be rotated", which is illogical to me. If the rotation is locked, then I'd expect the icon to cross out the rotated phone. Perhaps simply adding a diagonal through the icon would make it better?

Proposal:
- introduce new "orientation-lock.svg" icon (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StatusBar#rotation-lock).
- The behaviour will be the same as current (no icon displayed when orientation is unlocked.
- I would like to keep "orientation-unlock.svg" for general purpose, especially for option's tab icon (see attached screenshot). When Rotation indicator is revealed, and Big Icon (with caption) is displayed, I would like to display current rotation status. Similar behaviour is already implemented for Network Indicator, bluetooth indicator etc.

In my opinion we should provide two icons: Orientation-lock and orientation-unlock. I will propose some.

My proposal is to have two icons:
orientation-lock.svg
and
orientation-unlock.svg

What do you think about that?

Awesome!

Right now the latter image [standing + flat phone + move-arrow] is used for the lock case; so that would invert its meaning. But don't think users will mind the switch.

Thanks for picking this up so quickly.

I like the idea of using an X rather than a swooping arrow to indicate the rotation lock -- now that I look at them side-by-side, it seems clear to me the current icon describes what the phone /can't/ do because of the lock :-)

However I don't like the idea of adding an orientation-unlock.svg for two reasons: (1) when scaled down to the size of the panel, the lock and unlock icons look too siimilar, and (2) we are very short on real estate in the panel, so I'd prefer for no-icon-present to denote rotate unlocked.

Bartosz, thanks for drawing those icons!

I think it's probably not the best idea to use a device shape in this icon at all, though, for two reasons. First, as Charles mentioned, it leaves very little room for showing the current state. And second, it doesn't match the curvature or the aspect ratio of the actual hardware (not even allowing for cartoon-style distortion), especially when Ubuntu starts shipping on tablets (which are usually much wider, and which don't have such big bottom margins).

My original suggestion was a keyhole inside a 3/4-circle arrow. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StatusBar#rotation-lock> Maybe a keyhole wouldn't work at that size, but at least I doubt it would have the problem of implying the opposite of what it meant.

I suggest that the icon be based on a 3/4-circle arrow, either with the keyhole inside, or with a diagonal slash crossing it.

Thank you James.

I will prepare orientation-lock.svg icon, according to your design.

Could you please elaborate how "orientation-unlock.svg" should looks like. I would like to display current Rotate status (after swipe down, when Orientation icon is displayed with caption) as it is currently in Bluetooth indicator (please take a look at bugdescription). I would like to have common UX between all indicators.

I will prepare screenshots with additional comment if you do not understand my explanation (sorry for poor English).

Hi James.

I compared old icon with new one and the old one is more clear and intuitive for me.
I checked it in status bar and in system settings.

Why the old icon cannot be used for tablets?
Is there any way to improve old icon ?

"Why the old icon cannot be used for tablets?" As I said, because it has very different aspect ratio, curvature, and bottom margin from a tablet. It looks like a phone. But all that is a secondary problem from the arrow being tiny.

The released new icon solves this problem indeed.

I'm not fond of the new gsm-signal and wifi indicators though, but that's another matter ;)

Thanks for the fix!
