Bug Description

Reported by an OEM who's phone currently does have such an icon, there is no visual indication that a wired headset has been connected to the phone and in use:

[Procedures]
1.insert the earphone

[Expect results]
should be has earphone icon and notification
[Actual results]
There is no earphone icon when inserting the earphone

<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#notification>: "When the primary sound output changes for any reason except an app request, or when the sound volume changes for any reason, a confirmation bubble should appear showing the icon, and volume, of the primary output for the current active role. (For example, when you plug in headphones, a notification bubble should appear showing the current volume for headphones — both to reassure you that sound won’t blare from the speakers, and to remind you what the current headphones volume is.)"

It seems this is not universal among handsets, so posting this bug here for discussion as to whether it should be a feature of future ubuntu phones.

Is this finally going to be implemented in a future or it is still on discussion?

Space is at a premium in the status bar, for reasons of both real estate (there just isn't that much room) and elegance (the more icons, the more distracting).

So it would not be ideal to add an extra icon for headsets. Nor would it be practical to change the existing icon to show a headset: most of the space of the icon is taken up by the volume waves, so there would be little room to show a recognizable headset.

However, the actual problem -- "no visual indication that a wired headset has been connected to the phone" -- can be solved in another way. As I have already specified, but has not been implemented yet, when you connect (or disconnect) a headset you should get the same kind of notification as if you changed the volume. And that notification should name, and use the icon of, the current sound output.
