Bug Description

Almost every phone made in the past 15 years has a feature where the user can press 'call' twice to redial the last number dialed. However, this feature is not implemented on Ubuntu Touch.

The details vary slightly from phone to phone, but nearly everything produces the same result after two or three button presses. For example, on Android, one 'call' press starts the dialer app, the second press fills in the last-dialed number, and the third press starts the call. Older/simpler phones usually only require pressing twice.

Could we add this?

Same behavior in Utopic 140.

Recent calls can be redialed by dragging up the "Recent" tab from the bottom then selecting a number, but it'd be nice to have a shortcut attached to the call button when no number is entered (one press would populate the number area with the last-dialed number, another press would start the call).

If we want to allow this feature, the call button in the dialer has to be enabled all the time, even if the number input field is empty.
A tap on the call button would pre-populate the number input field with the last dialed number and user would have to tap again to place the call.

Currently the call button is disabled because we want to avoid calls being placed by mistake if user invokes the bottom edge swipe. So, my only concern is how likely it will be that calls are placed by mistake if we allow the "press-call-twice-to-redial" functionality.

I agree with the impracticality of not having an easier way to redial after hitting the voice mail, and new customers are requesting this feature too. Maybe a button to repopulate the input field and spare one tap?
Right now it takes 3 gestures to redial: swipe up, pick the number, hit the dial button. Could we at least have a button to hijack the first two steps, and then be able to just press call?
