More than this, the launcher needs to show on top of everything. Currently, with the browser open the OSK stays on top of the Launcher.

To reproduce:
Open browser
Go to add URL so the OSK is visible
now try and bring in the launcher

Desired outcome:
Launcher on top of everything always and everywhere

On inspection I think this is an OSK problem as in the scenario described above if I then launch the telephony app the OSK stays on screen then I edge swipe to bring in Gallery and the OSK stays visible.

I have to start a meeting now so am struggling to express a precise recommendation properly - if I haven't updated this when you look at it ping me on irc to discuss.

As a workaround: try in the shell to hide the OSK when showing the launcher.

The app that has a text field in focus has its focus removed as soon as the launcher is opened. That alone should be enough already for the keyboard to go away but it does not do that at the moment, need to investigate why.

Per IRC discussion:

is there a timeframe for shell surfaces separation in unity8 so we can dynamically stack the OSK under the launcher?

or should we do something smart like stack the surface above shell when shell_has_focus, put under shell when !shell_has_focus and app is in view so that the launcher can still be on top of the OSK

Alternately we could connect to app suspension, to make the app release its input context and thus hide the keyboard

Added ubuntu-ux for design input on what should actually happen.

The Window component will, in theory, make this relatively easy [1], but we've just never tried, so not sure what the implications will be. We estimated it for a week of work on the shell side.

Confirmed fixed in Utopic 160. The launcher now appears above the OSK. So do SMS notifications, for that matter.

However, snap decisions (incoming call) still appear below the keyboard. And if the OSK is visible when the screen turns off, it will briefly pop over the welcome screen, disappear, then leave a blank space in the app where it used to be. Depending on the app, it may be necessary to kill the app and re-start it to get the keyboard back. But that's probably a different bug.
