Bug Description

It looks very rare, I can't find anybody else on internet with the same problem .... except jasmines: http://blog.ubuntu-tweak.com/2011/09/18/ubuntu-tweak-0-6-beta-is-ready-for-testers-and-developers.html/comment-page-2#comment-21380
The interface looks like this screenshot: http://mediacdn.disqus.com/uploads/mediaembed/images/181/2902/original.jpg
I did try to change Gnome Shell theme, gtk3 and metacity theme, but nothing changed, so it looks not depending on graphical elements in any 3rd part theme...
Launching the application in a terminal window, this is what I get: http://pastebin.com/hzmcu7Ab
Just can't figure out how to solve it.

Please tell me your desktop environment, thanks.

I'm now on Gnome Shell, but it happens also on Unity or fallback mode. I did it a try, restarting my sessions.

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

Could you try to run "ubuntu-tweak -m Icon" under terminal, to see if there's a page to tweak icons?

Bigo72-c (bigo72-c) wrote :

Mmmhh, I can't understand what I'm looking for, but I did it, and a page with desktop icons options appeared. I attached it to this comment.
Do you need also the terminal output?

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

Seems its ok with function.

Could you provide the desktop environment to me, run this under terminal:

  env|grep DESKTOP_SESSION

Bigo72-c (bigo72-c) wrote :

Here it is

alex@1201N:~$ env|grep DESKTOP_SESSION
DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-shell
GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID=this-is-deprecated

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

So it's the standard GNOME Shell desktop, I've also tried Ubuntu Tweak under GNOME Shell, everything is OK.

Have you tried to set back your desktop themes to original?

Bigo72-c (bigo72-c) wrote :

Yes, I did! Shell theme is still the original one and I changed the gtk3/metacity one back to Ambiance, just to try it ... nothing.
Do you know when a little problem becomes the most important thing in your life, when you play with informatic stuff?
It is exactly like this for me at the moment :-) I forget my wife also, thinking to my Ubuntu Tweak issue!
At the end I will format everithing and install again, you will see :-(

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

Sorry to hear that, I really can't reproduce this issue in my system :(

Hope this issue will be solved after you install again.

Mauro (jasmines) wrote :

Same here, after several reinstalls and purges.
DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-shell
GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID=this-is-deprecated

Bigo72-c (bigo72-c) wrote :

Welcome to my world, Mauro! Hoping somebody can help us ...

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

@jasmines

What did you try to reinstall?

I think I know where is the problem - empty values on dconf:
apps -> ubuntu-tweak -> tweak (Name: admins; Value: [])
apps -> ubuntu-tweak -> tweak (Name: tweaks; Value: [])

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

This is empty by default.

Could you tell me your language locale? Thanks.

Bigo72-c (bigo72-c) wrote :

Mine is italian

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

Seems not related to the language locale.

Did you install some extension or other library for your GNOME Shell desktop?

Mauro (jasmines) wrote :

I tried to purge and reinstall ubuntu tweak (should I purge and reinstall anything else?)
I installed many gnome shell extensions:
Menu
windowNavigator
icon-manager
Removable Drive Menu
Extended Places Status Indicator
Alternative Status Menu
Pidgin IM Integration
Cardapio
Static Workspaces
Auto Move Windows
GPaste
User Themes
Shut Down Menu
gnome-shell-classic-systray
Applications Menu
Panel Favorites
Places Status Indicator

Window List
Bottom Panel
SkypeNotification
Dock
Message Notifier
noa11y
Native Window Placement

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

I'm not sure if it is a problem caused by GNOME Shell extensions, because you said it happened in both GNOME Shell and Unity, right?

Bigo72-c (bigo72-c) wrote :

yes, correct. I have the same problem with Unity too

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

Still have no idea what how to cause this problem.

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

Hi all, could you please try this version?

I tried to solve this issue, but I'm not sure if it works, so please install this special build and try it, tell me the result, thanks.

Thanks, I will test this evening, I give you a feedback ASAP.

Olivier.

Nothing, Ding, unfortunately .... same issue here ...
I was hoping :-(

Olivier (olivier-bitsch) wrote :

I've tried with the provided version, but same issue. I've also tried with LANG="C" but still not.

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

It's really strange. At now, it seems only happened on the non-English default locale.

This time I tried to remove all the translation, only in English. Could you help to try again? Thanks

Olivier (olivier-bitsch) wrote :

The application comes now in english, but doesn't fix the icons. But for your information, the categories names still in French, may be this cause the issue?

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

Could you run "ubuntu-tweak -d" under terminal and give me the output to me? Thanks.

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

Please install this new version, this time I dumped more debug information.

After install this version, then run Ubuntu Tweak from Terminal by "ubuntu-tweak -d", and give me the output. Thanks.

Changed in ubuntu-tweak:
milestone: none → 0.6.1
assignee: nobody → Ding Zhou (tualatrix)
status: New → Confirmed
importance: Undecided → High
Olivier (olivier-bitsch) wrote :

Please find has attached file, the debug info. For you information, I ran ubuntu-tweak, click on "Tweaks" button, then close.

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

OK, seems no wrong in the debug log.

This time, please download this extension, and install it form the Preferences dialog in Ubuntu Tweak, and enable it, try to see if it will be showed.

You can follow the guide here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuTweak/HowToWritePlugins

Olivier (olivier-bitsch) wrote :

Funny thing, when I enable the plugins, it's showed and all others too. But once close and restart ubuntu-tweak, all icons have disapeared again.

Olivier (olivier-bitsch) wrote :

Adtionnaly, If I try to open font, it failes with the following error, may be this is liked ?

Olivier (olivier-bitsch) wrote :

The same error occured also with a lot of others modules, but not all.

Ding Zhou (tualatrix) wrote :

Cool!

Does the "TypeError: expected string or buffer" error happen every time after your restart Ubuntu Tweak?

Could you give me a list of the modules have this error. And I want to know have you made a system update?

Olivier (olivier-bitsch) wrote :

The problem is that sometime some plugin works, sometime not.

At this time only "Fonts" works now, all other not. Before, Fonts not
working, but Bluetooth worked.

My system is up to date, but I always has this bug with Oneiric. Ubuntu
tweak never worked for me on 11.10 (bug already in the beta).

Olivier.

 OK

I wonder this random issue is caused by Python, but I can't figure out which part is wrong.

Let me think...

I have a similar problem with Olivier (in continuation to Ding's comment and packages on 6th Jan). Enabling the bluetooth extension shows the icons in the tweak tab, but no icons in the admin page. But since then I cannot start tweak.

This is in continuation of my previous post. This is the error that I get:

I installed the bluetoothsettings.py in the "tweaks" tab of the prefs and all the other buttons appeared along with the "bluetooth settings" button in the "tweaks" section. But when i close ubuntu-tweak and reopen it, the "tweaks" section is empty again. So I open the prefs and in the "tweaks" tab, I uncheck/check the bluetooth setting and every reappears in the "tweaks" section.

Could you also try to verify if you can install the bluetooth extension from this link: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-tweak/+bug/905914/comments/30 ?

Version 2 works for me too!
