A workaround for me was to install the Lightning plugin via the extension manager of Thunderbird.
It's slightly different because this plugin is installed specifically for the current user, and not for all users on the machine.
And the upgrades are handled by Thunderbird itself, instead of Ubuntu.
But it works quite well, and is in my language
