Heron LTS 8.04.3 and 20100126's 8.04.4 don't support Intel 82574L NICs

The version of e1000e.ko in both 8.04.3 and 26 January 2010's 8.04.4 don't support the Intel 82574L Gbit NICs as found on Supermicro X8DAL motherboards. The module loads, but the hardware isn't detected. Output from lshw follows.

As I said in #3, the driver in 20100126's Lucid Lynx works fine, but neither 8.04.3 nor 8.04.4 do. Does Ubuntu not backport drivers to earlier LTS releases (i.e. 8.04)?

     Thanks for the confirmation. As to updates to Hardy, I have been told that, at this point, we only do major security or bug fixes. As the new LTS is about to drop in Lucid, I don't see this making the SRU requirements to be fixed for Hardy. I'm going to mark this Fix Released since the Lucid driver is working on this hardware.

This is not invalid, and not true, more recent kernel releases have not just contained security releases. There are a number of good reasons to stay on hardy, and not get forced to lucid.
Can we please provide a backported driver into the next hardy kernel release? I am sure there will be one, and updating the driver can't be that big a job.

cowbutt - Can you run 'apport-collect 513292' after booting the kernel that _does_ work with e1000e so I can get your platform information in a standard form ? I've checked the changes to e1000e that happened after 2.6.24-24, but I'm not seeing much that would have had an effect.

Hi Tim - Sorry, but I rebuilt the system as a CentOS system 7 months ago shortly after I opened this bug. This is the standard Linux Workstation platform that my employer buys and I was testing it for out-of-the-box suitability for common Linux distros (Fedora and RHEL/Scientific Linux/CentOS passed with flying colours, SuSE mostly worked, then-current Ubuntu LTS failed, but the then-upcoming LTS looked reasonable).

I have quite a few servers deployed with hardy and a manually compiled driver to work around this problem.
I am just about to purchase an Asus ts300-e6/ps4 which has this chipset in it. During the build phase of the project it is for, we can add in some delay and make it available for testing if required.
I will also dig around and see if I have anything else I can test on in the meantime. (the asus box may be weeks before it is purchased)

cowbutt, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11
