Bug Description

The gutenprint source package creates, amongst others, the gutenprint-locales binary package (http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/gutenprint-locales).

There are several problems with this package:

* It installs source .po files in /usr/share/locale. This is wrong in the sense that only binary .mo files should be installed there, if at all. Gettext programs cannot use the source .po files to load translations.
* There is no need for the package to install translations, even if they were in compiled .mo format, since they are already stripped from the gutenprint source package, imported into Launchpad (https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/gutenprint) and then exported in language packs (as an example, language-pack-de-base installs these translations in /usr/share/locale-langpack/de/LC_MESSAGES/gutenprint.mo)

In short, it seems that there is no need for building this particular package and having it in the repos, unless it is fixed to install .mo translations -although they will in fact be extracted and put in the language packs.

And sorry for being rude, but this is so lame... there is no reason for this package to exist.

Okay, I figured out why is this package actually useful.

When you open a given printers properties window in system-config-printer, the Printer Options tab looks like this:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~kelemeng/pix/b0rk1.png

These English strings are coming from the gutenprint ppd file, and are translated in the gutenprint po files.

It turns out, that the po files in this package are used to localize the ppd when one adds a new printer. Because this package is not installed by default, you see the previous picture. After installing it, I can see the following:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~kelemeng/pix/b0rk2.png

Much better, but there are still some English strings. Let's see what happens, when I msgunfmt the mo file from the langpack to the place of the gutenprint_hu.po from this package:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~kelemeng/pix/b0rk3.png

Almost perfect :).

So, I think we need to ship gutenprint's po files (I have no idea why do they use po and not mo format... but at least it works) from Launchpad either as updates of this package and making sure it is installed by default, or as part of the language packs, in which case this package could be really eliminated.

So, as I understand it, the package is still useful? If not, please re-confirm this.

Well, it is useful, but we could do better if we would ship the gutenprint.po file in langpacks, and we would put it into the directory this package uses. More locales than upstream, more updates, and most importantly, translations would be used even if one forgets to install an extra package manually, like in bug #303273.

This is why we have this Launchpad Translations thingy, remember? ;)

langpack-o-matic devs: What do you think? Can we export po files to language packs?

We have the source code, anything is possible :) However, we'll need some way to mark some po files as "please ship me in source form". We could maintain that list in langpack-o-matic itself, or mark them in Launchpad.

What's up with this bug? Any news? Anything that could be done to help fix this?
