Ubuntu Server Tips: ifup and ifdown

You can bring up a network interface by using sudo ifup interface , and you can bring it down using sudo ifdown interface. Keep in mind if you are connected via ssh and you bring down the interface you are using you will be disconnected.

I was trying not to make any assumptions about the user's level of knowledge. I was looking to help people who are coming to the system from another OS such as Solaris and who might not be familiar with the Ubuntu Server way of doing things. For example in Solaris there is no ifup or ifdown, you use ifconfig commands. Also, Server users are much more likely to be bringing network interfaces up and down via the command line on a regular basis.

Yes, I see your point, and thanks a lot for your help. This was indeed an unwritten rule :) I am just trying to find the right balance where the tips do not loose the attention of the knowledgeable user...
