For unknown reasons, as of today the postgresql juju charm started clobbering pg_hba.conf on the server - breaking the ident mapping configuration that was required for authentication from the web app to the database.
I've restored the config on the server, and have had to mark the file chattr +i on the filesystem in the meantime to prevent the postgresql charm from continuing to clobber it.
