Bug Description

The package linux-image-cell is missing on hardy. The linux-cell metapackage depends on linux-image-2.6.24-8-cell, but that package does not exist. This can be seen here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/linux-image-cell

Hardy kernels for other archs have been updated already, but not Linux cell. This can be seen here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/linux-image-2.6.24-8-powerpc
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/linux-image-2.6.24-8-386
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/linux-image-2.6.24-8-generic

It should be possible to get a booting PS3 with hardy by either using the cell kernel from gutsy, or by installing the powerpc64-smp image instead. But ideally, it should be the up to date cell image which is being used.

Apparently the cell flavour has been merged into powerpc64-smp, so you can just use that. However, we should reinstate the cell metapackages as transitional packages to get people switched over smoothly to powerpc64-smp.

Since there is a meta-package "linux-image-cell" with undefined dependencies therefore lots of ps3 users tried to run hardy with either gutsy kernels or from kernel.org/.../geof . And many of them were said to keep staying at version gutsy7.10 for there apparantly are no cell kernels anymore (at the forums at psubuntu).

Even in the package description of powerpc64-smp there is no word saying "cell" .....

And by the way installing linux-image-2.6.24-11-powerpc64-smp with aptitude automatics you get also yaboot which needs an apple system to function.

In my previous comment I wrote "we should reinstate the cell metapackages as transitional packages" which addresses most of your most recent comment.

Please file a separate bug on the linux package about the yaboot requirement.

The relevant meta packages for cell seem to be there now we therefore I think we can close this.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
