Thunderbird doesn't open some links

Bug Description

Thunderbird 5.0 on Ubuntu 11.04.

Some links in e-mails don't work, i.e. nothing happens when they're clicked. When Thunderbird is started from a terminal, the following error is generated on clicking an affected link (German localization):

** (thunderbird-bin:7639): WARNING **: Could not launch default application for URI: Vorgang wird nicht unterstützt

However, this only happens for some links. Most links open normally in Firefox (my default browser) and don't generate the error.

Examples for affected links are:

http://www.ploscompbiol.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pcbi.1002108

Maybe the problem is caused by the "%" characters?

The problem doesn't occur with Thunderbird 5.0 on Windows XP - the same links work fine there.
