Ubuntu Mate boots to black screen after installation

Bug Description

ISO of 20240207

Tested on QEMU/KVM VM and Acer TravelMate 4740. Both installs completed successfully, but on reboot ended up with a black screen with only the mouse pointer visible.

Trying different video drivers in the VM made no difference.

Logged into the TravelMate from F2 console (to retrieve log files) and discovered that "startx" worked.

Having this annoying problem too on a Dell E5550 Intel Core i5-5300U with Noble Numbat Mate installed.
After installation and reboor, black screen and no pointer.
The workaround to add nomodeset to the grub config file works, but then i can not change screen brightness anymore.
