Colours in bash by default is bad

On a new install, bash defaults to using colours on the terminal. Leaving aside the issue of colourblindness, about which I know little, those of us over 45 may have early stage cataracts aand be unable to see dark blue on a black background, and/or yellow on a white background.
I am completely unable to use bash with the default profile because of the widespread use of dark blue, and I had an eye test at the hospital yesterday, and my eyesight was declared as "typical for your age, and it will be at least two years before treatment (lens replacement eye surgery) would be appropriate".
Considering I used Unix scripting languages for about 20 years with no colour screens/support (can you say "vt52"? (or Lear-Siegler ADM3A), colour is obviously a non-essential barrier to use for many people, and should be considered an optional extra, and either only installed if requested, or on first use by a new user.
Failing that, a "one click" "disable use of colours on terminals" would go a long way to helping.
