xdg-open uses LibreOffice to open PDFs when forwarding X over ssh

Bug Description
I often use ssh -X to run programs from my Ubuntu Mate laptop on my workstation. If I open a PDF file using xdg-open, it is opened in LibreOffice.
If I run xdg-open locally on the laptop to open a PDF file, it opens in Atril, as expected.
I think this may just be a configuration issue, but I haven't changed anything relevant (as far as I know).
