I installed a few days ago. The two network icons appeared after the update for update-notifier-common:amd64 (3.192, 3.192.1) for me. At least it was recognized after the reboot. Thankfully at the same time my battery indicator came back because that randomly disappeared in an earlier update.

I do have this problem too, sometimes it's the network icon, sometimes it's bluetooth icon.

Today, I disconnected my bluetooth dongle, then I connected it back to my laptop, then 2 bluetooth icons appeared.

I force-upgraded a Lubuntu 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS on the 2018-08-11 (through the 'sudo do-release-upgrade -d' command), had no nightmare in the dist-upgrade logs.

I touched nothing yet, and also see this consistent icons sequence after a few reboots: 1 net indicator, 1 battery indicator, 1 net indicator, 1 sound indicator, 1 datetime indicator, 1 master-shutdown indicator.

The 2nd network indicator occurrence seems to be the real one :)

Visually, the 1st occurrence menu shows no sections delimiters (i.e. no horizontal delimiter between the "Wifi" and the "Mobile broadband" sections by example; those delimiters are visible in the 2nd occurrence).

Additional info: if I log out, then log in the same user again (instead of rebooting), the icons sequence changes to: 1 battery indicator, 1 net indicator, 1 net indicator, 1 sound indicator, 1 datetime indicator, 1 master-shutdown indicator.

If I reboot again, the sequence order will go back to what described in comment #10.

Ubuntu MATE 18.04.1, normal install. I sometimes get 2 x network icons, it seems to happen randomly, a logout/login fixes.
