caja doesn't show video thumbnails for files on network shares

The main reason I prefer Thunar over caja for my file manager is because Thunar shows thumbnails for video files stored on cifs (and presumably NFS too) shares whereas caja doesn't.

If caja could be enhanced to show thumbnail previews for video (and image and PDF too, ideally) files stored on network shares then I would likely have no more need to install Thunar too.

This is the case under UM 17.10b x64. I should add that video thumbnails for local files work fine and that I'm mainly concerned with h264 MP4 and mkv files, but I'd hope all popular formats could be previewed over a network.

Have you enable Thumbnails for remote drives?

Yes, I believe I have.

Under Caja's Edit -> Preferences -> 'Preview' tab -> 'Show Thumbnails' it is set to 'Always' and 'Only for files smaller than' is set to 4GB. Most of my video files are less than 4GB so that isn't a big issue but I would prob like to see that bumped up a bit to 8 or 16GB too, ideally.

Thumbnails for video files and those of ooo-thumbnailer do not show up in sftp or smb shares
mounted via the caja menu option sftp://<email address hidden>/xxxx smb://<email address hidden>/xxxx
In cifs shares instead mounted via autofs preview works as it should
/mnt/xxxxxx -fstype=cifs,vers=3.0,rw,credentials=/home/xxxxx/.cifspwd,nodfs,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000,file_mode=0700,dir_mode=0700 ://169.254.43.186/xxxxx

Strange thing is that pdf thumbnails are working in all mount situations
