Changing preferred file manager doesn't work

Bug Description

Under UM 17.10 x64 (and indeed any version of MATE under any OS/platform), changing the preferred file manager app to Thunar (and likely anything else) doesn't work. For example, if you click on the Home icon on the desktop or open Home under the Places menu, it still gets opened with caja when the preferred file manager is set to 'Open with Thunar'.

I have also tried installing nemo / Files under 17.10b using Preferred Applications to set Files as the default File Manager but only Caja gets opened when you click Home on the desktop or Home under Places, just as happens with Thunar.

If I right click on a directory under caja, the top five options in the context menu are:

Open
Open With Open folder with Thunar
Open With Other Application...

'Open With Open folder with Thunar' works when ran from that context menu. In contrast, and where my problem seems to be is if I right click a folder on the MATE desktop (eg Home) the only open options given in the desktops directory context menu are:

Open
Open With Other Application...

Maybe it is more accurate to say this is a bug in the MATE desktop rather than caja because the latter seems to be aware of the preferred file manager setting whilst the desktop doesn't.

It seems I was right in thinking it is caja that handles the desktop icons for MATE although I'm not sure about the 'Places' links etc yet. Maybe that is something that would need to change in MATE menu, the advanced menu etc?
