Bug Description
I've noticed that the ubuntu mate firefox extensions that are downloaded when firefox is installed seems to prevent the updating of certain preferences. Every time I update my homepage it is reset upon launching firefox again. It changes the homepage when firefox is downloaded directly from mozilla but the mozilla version keeps preferences that I change. I'll poke around some more to see if I can find a reason for it / if there is anything specific to the version in the ubuntu mate repository.

Probably a duplicate of bug #1605887. Can you please provide the output of the command: inxi -S (to confirm your version of Ubuntu MATE)
