Unable to connect to wifi with Orca

Bug Description

I don't think this is specifically related to the wifi applet whatever it's called, but I've only just got back into using Linux and I'm still getting to know what bit does what.

I cannot find a way to connect to my WIFI with Orca. Logic would dictate that I can use CTRL+ALT+ESCAPE to get to the bottom panel, or use Orca Flat Review while in the top menu to get to a panel where I can tab to the network chooser, but this isn't doable.

Am I missing something? Or is it impossible?

hi, which version of ubuntu-mate you currently running? what happens when you press control +alt+tab? which version of mate are you running? which version of orca are you running?

it may be the fact that the version of ubuntu mate, is running the gtk3 port not gtk2 there are accessibility issues with the gtk3 version

Chris Norman (chris-norman2) wrote :

OK. Should I be reporting against some element of GTK3 then?

Thank you for your help.

Chris Norman (chris-norman2) wrote :

OK, sorry, only just noticed the other comments...

Lemme answer them now::

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04, although when I first posted I was using Ubuntu 16.10 Beta.

MATE Desktop Environment 1.12.1

The way I got around it was to right click randomly in the top panel to the left of the SHutdown button until I got the right widget.

There's other widgets in there too like the volume control and the calendar... The Calendar and the Volume control will speak if you put the mouse over them (with mouse announcements turned on obviously), but the Wireless does not.

Thanks again mate, and if you're the Majid I think you are, nice to hear from you mate!

Too many mates in that last sentance! :P

Anyways, when I hit control alt escape I get the bottom panel where the workspace switcher and things are. That's fine, but it's the top panels I want... Control alt tab used to go to them I'm sure, but no longer it would seem. Not even in Ubuntu 16.04.

majid hussain (mhussaincov93) wrote :

write, here goes,
press cont+alt+escape.
press control+f10
list of options will popup.
click delete panel I think it is called.
then try cont+alt+escape again if you don't see the wireless network icon, you may need to upgrade mate to the version stated

if that option does not work, i.e the option delete this panel is not there, then try alt+f2 type mate-panel --replace
it may help.
i'm running mate- 1.14.1 on sonar gnu-linux not *buntu
there was a upgrade to mate-panel which fixed an issue wherein non of the applets were being spoken via orca.
don't know if this is the bugg.
how ever fixed here:

and yes, I am thee majid :D

Chris Norman (chris-norman2) wrote :

OK, I'm not convinced by the nature of the fix because it's removed the workspace switcher ETC which I may conceivably want to see, so I don't consider this a full fix, but hey, it's a killer work around and it's got me going!

Thank you so much, that's really helpful.

It's the following bug : https://github.com/mate-desktop/marco/issues/118#issuecomment-355697924

You can use ctrl+alt+shift+escape to go the top bar until the bug will be fixed. Another way will be switch to Metacity.

Best regards.
