Bug Description
In a text field in any application, web browser and text editor, if you double-click a word to select it then hold Shift (or Ctrl + Shift) and press the right or left arrow keys, the text selection will grow or shrink based on the position of the caret, which is put on the right of the text selection.
However in some applications the caret gets put on the left of the text selection, so holding Shift and pressing the right arrow key de-selects the word from the left instead of selecting text on the right. This is unexpected, inconsistent and can be annoying.
Some applications I've noticed this behaviour on are:
Pluma
DeaDBeeF
Mousepad (Xubuntu 16.04)
All other applications and dialogue boxes I can think of seem to behave in the normal manner.
I've tested this in Pluma on Ubuntu MATE 17.10 daily and I can't reproduce the issue you describe.
