Bug Description

Desktop icons overlap/stack, especially when any external storage, e.g. USB drive, is inserted into the computer. The USB drive's icon overlaps that of any other icon currently present on the desktop.
It was an old bug for GNOME and apparently, MATE hasn't fixed it yet.

If you right click the desktop, have you got 'Keep Aligned' ticked on unticked? I can't reproduce this issue with the default option of 'Keep Aligned' enabled.

I noticed this bug in Ubuntu Mate 15.04 Beta 2. When using the MATE Tweak tool and toggling the Desktop icons, the new icons will overlap one another. I just tried this on my Ubuntu Mate 14.10 desktop and it doesn't seem to be happening.

I can reproduce that in 14.04. For me "Keep Aligned" works only in horizontal direction so I can make icons overlap others in the same column (see screenshot).

This screenshot shows how inserting a removable drive overlaps another hard disk drive's icon.

This screenshot shows, when I click on "Organise Desktop by Name", the overlapping icons get organised as it should be.

Icons overlap despite "Keep Aligned" is checked in desktop right-click menu.

One way to reproduce this bug:

- In 'Mate Tweak' tick "Show Desktop Icons" and 'Mounted Volumes' and none else

- begin with an empty Desktop, no volumes mounted and create a folder on the Desktop (keep aligned is ticked)

- right-click on the Desktop and select 'Organize Desktop by Name' (the folder will move to the top-left corner)

- mount a volume (internal partition or usb-drive) - the icons will overlap

Can you reproduce this bug with newer version of Ubuntu MATE?
