Bug Description
Desktop icons overlap/stack, especially when any external storage, e.g. USB drive, is inserted into the computer. The USB drive's icon overlaps that of any other icon currently present on the desktop.
It was an old bug for GNOME and apparently, MATE hasn't fixed it yet.

If you right click the desktop, have you got 'Keep Aligned' ticked on unticked? I can't reproduce this issue with the default option of 'Keep Aligned' enabled.
