Bug Description

Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 Zesty x86_64

kernel 4.10.0-30-generic #34-Ubuntu

Macbook Pro 13" early 2015 / MacBookPro12,1

Intel Core i5-5278U
Intel Iris Graphics 6100 (Broadwell GT3)

Hi, i don't really know how to properly report a bug here, sorry if some info is missing, ask me please if it's the case.
***

Essentially it seems i have the same problem as this bug reported here for Mint 18 (reported as fixed by "Upgrading kernel from version 4.4.0-28 to 4.4.0-53":

https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1599704

In this person case:

"Periodically at random times, the screen will flicker to black and then return to normal.

Dual Monitor setup, 1 DP, 1 HDMI
Only happens on DisplayPort monitor, not HDMI monitor.

Intel NUC5I3RYH
-Intel HD Graphics 5500"

***

Here:

It's a ~1 second flicker before returning to normal (switch to black, i can see my monitor displaying the "display port" input label when going back to normal).

In my case, i use the laptop internal monitor and a 4k/UHD one connected through minDP/DP, it only happens on the 4K/DP monitor, if i connect/add an HDMI monitor to the setup, the problems still only happens to the 4K/DP connected one (and not the internal retina screen or the hdmi one).

I only installed a fresh Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 yesterday (& upgraded everything) on this laptop.

So far i see the problem happens the more regularly/often when i switch to typing in a (gnome) terminal window (when the focus was for instance on Firefox) or clicking on a youtube video in Firefox.

For instance if i was typing something in Firefox and focus very fast on the terminal and start typing right away, i get a one second blank/flicker systematically or almost systematically. Doing the same thing quite slowly doesn't seem to trigger the bug in this case.

it happens the most apparently when i'm interacting (typing) in the terminal. (For instance, i don't remember it happening when using DarkTable, the File manager, Software, Spotify...) [edit: it just happened once in Polari]

Just now i tried installing the "Intel Graphics Update Tool" for Zesty, but after upgrading a few things, the problem is still the same.

(I'm using the Xorg session, not the Wayland one.)

Edit again: It seems the bug is A LOT more prevalent when playing videos (for instance with MPV).

One more edit: The bug doesn't happen if i close my laptop lid and only keeps the external DP/4K display.
