Kicked out of gnome-shell to tty

After being logged in to gnome-shell 3.20.2-0ubuntu1~xenial1 (and all previous versions in the 3.20 series) for a few minutes, I'm invariably kicked out of gnome-shell to a tty. This, it seems, is caused by some sort of conflict with (all) proprietary nvidia drivers.

The problem has already been reported and solved in Arch Linux. Please have a look at:
