Bug Description

This doesn't happen in the first minutes after logging in but soon, every corner/alt+tab/alt+f2 leads to a gnome-shell crash, and after a few more, to a session crash... where I have to kill gdm or reboot in order to get back to an X session.

I'm using the gnome-staging ppa but reverted to the official version without improvement (now back to 3.16).

I cannot confirm this on Ubuntu, but elsewhere I see people on Fedora, CentOS and RHEL reporting a workaround for these symptoms is to go into Gnome Tweaks / Appearance / Enable Animations, and turn them ON.

I had a GNOME Shell plugin ("Overview All Windows"[1]) that was unsuccessfully installed, which crashed GNOME Shell whenever I pressed the Super key or moved my mouse to the hot corner.

Reinstalled the extension and the problem was gone. *gasp*
