This just happened to me.

  Clutter:ERROR:./clutter-actor.c:1453:clutter_actor_update_map_state: assertion failed: (!(must_be_realized && !may_be_realized))

is the assertion that failed.

What I did: pressed <Super>, typed "off", pressed <Tab>, pressed <Enter>, realized I'm typing into gnome-shell instead of gnome-terminal and tried to backpedal with <Esc> or <Super> to no luck, it was already frozen (dumping core into apport takes a long nice while).
