When messages are deleted from a folder they are not expunged

When messages are deleted from a folder in Evolution they are moved to the 'Trash' folder however when looking at the 'Maildir' folder they still exist. For instance in my 'Spam' folder I use Spamassasin to daily report spam. Once that is done I delete the messages for they don't get reported again. I had 30 messages in the /Maildir/.Spam/cur folder, 27 of those were reported last night so I deleted 27 of them and they were moved to 'Trash'. I ran Spamassassin to report the 3 new ones and instead there were 30 messages reported. Looking in my /Maildir/.Spam/cur folder I have 27 messages, 24 which should not be there because they were deleted:

However as you can see in the attached screenshot there are only three messages showing in my Spam folder. Permissions for the folders under .Spam seem to be correct:

One thing I did forget to mention, if I remove the messages from the 'Trash' folder then and only then are they also removed from the .Spam folder. This, to me, is not the correct way for this to work.
