Saw your comment on IRC. This is fixed on gnome-shell 3.12

btw, a workaround is put applications in folders or uninstalling them. You can do both of this in gnome-software.
The problems happens when there are more pages indicators (the dots on the right on the All Apps view) than the screen can fit, so the overview increase more than the entire screen.

This bug was on GNOME 3.12

After upgrading to 3.14 via staging ppa app grid shows correctly, but I also see strange app icons

I do not install it. It start showing after upgrade to GNOME 3.12 and continue shows on 3.14

Oh sorry, I meant 3.14. This is the commit that fixed it: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell/commit/?id=84cbbafaaeea987033ade89dcf5b2e7e5593a2c5

if with strange icons you mean the general gears icon I am seeing in your screenshot,, it's a different bug. Are you using the adwaita theme right?.
Can you file it at bugzilla.gnome.org with more information?

Thanks
