Bug Description
I upgraded my Ubuntu GNOME 13.04/3.8 installation to 13.10 with gnome-next and gnome-staging enabled and the media shortcut keys stopped working (volume, play, pause, stop). I didn't try any other shortcuts. There were some other problems, so I tried a clean install.
On a clean install all of 13.10/3.8 (no PPAs) the key shortcuts I tried worked (I tried the media keys and the terminal launcher Ctrl+Alt+T). I enabled gnome-next and updated my system. Looking through the shortcuts that can be set through the keyboard control panel, none of those in the sections "Launchers", "Screenshots", "Sound and Media", and "Universal Access" work, and the shortcuts relating to the user session (logout, lock) as well as the power button also fail to trigger the intended functions.
My system is an HP dm4t-1100. With older kernels gnome-shell would not consistently detect the Intel and Radeon (HDMI) sound devices, but that problem appears to have been fixed in the recent kernel. The sound dialogs work, too, and I haven't seen the shell crash yet. In the keyboard shortcuts control panel all of the relevant shortcuts are picked up (e.g. the media keys are detected properly).
I've read some chatter that other users are having similar problems, but all of the bug reports I see have the shell crashing or the sound device not appearing, and that is not my case.
An apport bug log is attached.

After upgrading to Trusty Tahr, I have the same issue. It's also worth noting that I didn't have this issue with Saucy, on which I ran Gnome 3.10 thanks to a PPA, and that the only function keys that do work for me are the brightness keys, which don't integrate with the desktop like they used to (they don't use Gnome's brightness indicator or the slider in the system menu).
I'm using a System76 Gazelle Professional laptop, if that helps.

I have upgraded Ubuntu GNOME 13.04 to Trusty Tahr Beta 2 before the final release of Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 LTS and everything was okay at my end. I'm using Lenovo G570 and all these keys are working just fine before and after the upgrade.
I didn't yet upgraded my system to the final release but will do shortly or most likely do a fresh new install - not sure yet. I'm patient enough and don't get so excited when there is a new version.
I don't use any PPA, I just use the default (GNOME 3.10) that comes with the release I'm using.
Perhaps it is the PPA that is causing this? not yet sure.
Tim, our head of dev (Ubuntu GNOME) will start working soon (hopefully) on the PPAs and if there is anything new, I shall update everyone on the mailing list and our social media channels.
Thank you for reporting this bug and making Ubuntu and Ubuntu GNOME even better!

Just like in #4. After updating to 14.04, media keys (volume control, screenshots...) stopped working. Still, I can control brightness. With 3.10 this problem hasn't occured.

It works now. :)
Comment #21 did trick for me:

Screenshots work.
Blocking screen works (but previous Super+L isn't working, just CTRL+ALT+L; when changing it to Super+L in shortcuts configuration, doesn't work at all).
Volume keys work (but with small problem, same as described here: http://

Updating gnome-settings- daemon fixed this issue.
