disconnetted external hd stops boot process

I have an external usb hd which I use as a backup unit, and it's mounted at boot, the corresponding /etc/fstab line is:

UUID=9b741cd4-17cc-4a46-856e-61c6bb71f243 /media/esterno ext4 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 2

After I switch off the pc and the external hd, sometimes I switch on the pc forgetting to switch on the external hd. I get a weird thing: ubuntu doesn't end the boot process and it doesn't arrive to show the lightdm screen.

Booting in the console mode I could see that the boot process stops because the external hd isn't online: the boot process asks whether to mount it manually or skip the mount, while if the user doesn't hit any key it waits indefinitely for the hd being online.

I think the graphical boot package should present the question to the user so that he/she can answer and continue the boot.
