have both unity and gnome shell when gnome is open doesn't crash but doesn't work correctly

Bug Description
had gnome shell working fine. gnome shell crashed . when checked it showed had kept broken packages. removed broken packages. uninstalled gnome shell reinstalled gnome shell. show that the gnome shell was up to date 3.8.3. but now updated to gnome shell 3.9.?. seems to be gnome shell with unity features and only left hand corner as special effects. some extensions work some do not. constantly crashes applications. asks to send error reports.
