Font hinting related. Were some global defaults changed?
(In the screenshots, the text in the dialogues also appears quite strongly hinted).
oluc: please document *exactly* what occurs, and exactly which default/non-default font rendering options are in use?

In 'Tweak tool'> Fonts> Hinting, is set to full
with the same test case [1]

another font like DejaVu Sans Mono Bold, works with all 4 hinting settings
actually, with the same test case, 'i' has also size issue, depending on the font size
