Bug Description
The branch that should be managed is:

There is sufficient packaging metadata in the branch to build it and
run the tests, but I'm not sure whether we're at the stage where
builds should go in the PPA: We haven't ported over users of the old
media scanner, and we haven't set things up for parallel installation.
Is that doable?
The branch itself should be buildable with only packages currently in
the archive, so there shouldn't be any of the dependency problems we
ran into getting the old version building correctly.
