Bug Description

I have the Dell Inspiron 3451 14" preinstalled with Ubuntu with a 64 bit Intel® Pentium® Processor N3540. An update from about a month ago causes my machine to have a kernel panic on reboot. If I do a factory reset, it works fine, but when I run updates on the "fresh install," the problems comes back.

I replaced the hard drive, and tried reinstalling stock Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit, and the problem persisted.

I can install 32 bit Ubuntu 14.04.03, and updates do not cause kernel panics now, but I do not have a functioning trackpad.

A similar problem can be found here: https://<email address hidden>/msg130184.html

Yes, this is a serious snafu on the part of Dell/Ubuntu. Dell has pulled the Inspiron 3551 Ubuntu Edition from their site. I was wrong about the bios setting, this is a strange bug. What does help is booting first into 3.13.0-57-generic then rebooting into the new kernel. Afterwards the new kernel will be able to boot from a full shutdown for some seemingly random length of time. The problem was introduced in 3.13.0-58-generic. Have you found other solutions?

It seems I've started a blog over at:

I guess I could git bisect this bug, but I had hoped for a better experience with a preinstalled Ubuntu Edition laptop.

Hi Brian,
thanks for converting your question [1] into a bug,
however, it's better to address one issue in a bug, which will make it easier to track and fix.

So could you please change the description to what you want to report?
* If it's related to the kernel panic issue, as we're unable to reproduce that problem here, it will be great if you can provide more debugging information for it. I would like to suggest you to open a new bug report with the HDD that has pre-installed Ubuntu on it.
You can boot into the previous kernel that does not have the kernel panic issue by hitting ESC key after the Dell logo, you will see the so-called GRUB menu after that, please select the previous kernel in "Advanced options for Ubuntu". And file a bug with that kernel (or even run upgrade to get the latest kernel, maybe it's already been fixed there)
* If it's related to the non-functioning touchpad, please run "apport-collect 1488672" command in the terminal to collect necessary reports for it.

Thanks!

Brian Fox, please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 1488672
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Brian, I did a git bisect on the affected kernel and I think I found the bad commit causing the kernel panic. Could you try building a kernel with the change in https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2015-June/058662.html reverted and see if it solves the problem with Dell's installed Ubuntu 64-bit? That is add the lines with the '-' in front back into step_wise.c? Build instructions are here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile. I find compiling easiest by just editing the Makefile, then make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers. Let me know if you need help.

Cheers

Brian, Dell's dkms modules will fail to build unless the beginning of the kernel Makefile looks something like this:

VERSION = 3
PATCHLEVEL = 13
SUBLEVEL = 0
EXTRAVERSION = -63-2015091101
