Bug Description

When I put in the CD (this is the PowerPC disc), there is no top-level README.txt.

There should be one, at the very least a brief note saying something like

"Welcome to Ubuntu, to install this Linux distribution, boot from the CD (hold
down the C key while restarting if you are on a Macintosh). Make sure you have
prepared some free partition space on your hard drive if you don't want Ubuntu
to replace your current operating system."

It's also important that it has the extension .txt, so it opens in Windows and
Mac OS without asking for the application it should be launched with.

I know there are install docs in a separate directory, but these are pretty
outdated for the Mac, and talk about 90MHz PowerBooks etc. Ubuntu Just Works
anyway, so no need to let them read a 50-page manual first. :]

I agree on this, even if it would contain only the same cd as on the CD sleeve
it would be useful. But better would be a copy of the install guide which the
docteam is creating

CC-ing the author of this guide and James Troup, who is incharge of creating the
ISO's.

James Troup is not in charge of creating the ISO images. I am. For that reason,
the bug is assigned to me.

There is already an installation manual on the CD, derived from that shipped by
Debian. Please could any work by the documentation team on an installation
manual should start with that, please, otherwise I'm going to spend all my time
correcting both of them as things change (unless it's just a very simple
walkthrough that doesn't touch on anything like automatic partitioning, non-CD
install methods, or whatever).

It would still be useful for a top-level README to exist.

According to mdke, the author of this install guide is not very active, too bad.
My idea was indeed a simple walkthrough (insert cd, reboot, follow thses simple
steps and read the large manual when you get stuck, after install look at
{wiki,mailinglists,help.u.c} if you need more support), and I'd be happy to
write it.

Feel free to attach such a one-page walkthrough and attach it to this bug. Be aware that it'll have to be different on different architectures, since such things as booting the CD are different on powerpc.
