Bug Description

Hi I just noticed that:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/focal/daily-live/current/ displays a warning:

Warning: This image is oversized (which is a bug) and will not fit onto a 2GB USB stick. However, you may still test it using a DVD, a larger USB drive, or a virtual machine.

however this warning is MISSING @jammy and @kinetic
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/jammy/daily-live/current/
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/

The same "bug" can be found with the other flavors like xubuntu,... as well

kind regards
Otto

The size limits change on a per release and per flavor basis. If the image was over the size limit then there would also be a .OVERSIZED file, given that it does not exist for Kubuntu I expect that the images are within the size limit set.

Dear Brian,
Thank you for pointing this out (a mighty python script indeed :-) )

I now see the limits are different for all flavors which explains why the .OVERSIZED file is missing,...

Nowadays a 2GB USB stick is a rarity anyway (I have one :-) )
It is just a little bit confusing if you open the browser with all 3 images and see the following setup (xubuntu)

FOCAL 1.8 GB ok! no warning, no .OVERSIZED
JAMMY 2.3 GB hm? no warning, no .OVERSIZED
KINETIC 2.7 GB ok! with a 2GB warning

maybe it would make more sense to set a size limit globally 4.38 GiB for a DVD, USB sticks sold currently will not be a bottleneck anyway,...

thank you
Otto

It would certainly be more convenient for us to maintain this code if there were a single size limit that applied everywhere!

Unfortunately since we are no longer bound by specific media (CDs) as a general size limit for images, we allow each flavor to define their own limits for how big the image should be, based on their particular user community's needs and the actual rate of growth of the software they use. The warnings nowadays are primarily there to let the flavor developers know their images have grown beyond expectations so that they can manage this growth in the fashion most suitable for them.

We could set a single size limit for a common commodity USB stick size, and that would be enough for all images (except perhaps UbuntuStudio, which might want 8GB instead of 4GB). But that doesn't mean all users should have to download 4GB of data to be able to use each flavor!

The one thing that I think is a real bug here is that the text of the warning on cdimage refers to specific media sizes and should be amended to be clearer / more generic.
