Bold or italic (using underscores) in very first word doesn't highlight

When I use underscores for _italic_ or __bold__, in the very first word of a new line, the word does not get highlighted in bold or italic. The anticipated behavior is that it gets highlighted.

When adding a space before the underscore, it works, it gets hightlighted. When using the underscores for a word in the middle of a line, it works.

When using asterisk (*) for *italic* or **bold** in a very first word of a new line, it works too. But not with underscores.
