Bug Description

Please backport virt-manager 1:1.0.1-0ubuntu2 (universe) from utopic to trusty.

Reason for the backport:
========================
trusty is running an old version of virt-manager 0.9.x

virt-manager >=1.0 has much needed snapshot features.

In order to make use of VM's in a convenient and productive manner that can start to compare to virtualbox or VMWare we need virt-manager 1.0 to get these snapshot features.

Testing:
========
Mark off items in the checklist [X] as you test them, but please leave the checklist so that backporters can quickly evaluate the state of testing.

You can test-build the backport in your PPA with backportpackage:
$ backportpackage -u ppa:<lp username>/<ppa name> -s utopic -d trusty virt-manager

* trusty:
[ ] Package builds without modification
[ ] virtinst installs cleanly and runs
[ ] virt-manager installs cleanly and runs

Reverse dependencies:
=====================
The following reverse-dependencies need to be tested against the new version of virt-manager. For reverse-build-dependencies (-Indep), please test that the package still builds against the new virt-manager. For reverse-dependencies, please test that the version of the package currently in the release still works with the new virt-manager installed. Reverse- Recommends, Suggests, and Enhances don't need to be tested, and are listed for completeness-sake.

virtinst
--------
* koan
  [ ] trusty (Reverse-Depends)

virt-manager
------------
* ubuntu-virt-mgmt
  [ ] trusty (Reverse-Depends)

I added utopic sources to my trusty installation pinned at a low priority.
After running
apt-get remove --purge virt-manager libvirt-bin python-spice-client-gtk spice-client-gtk
apt-get autoremove
apt-get autoclean

apt-get update
apt-get install virt-manager/utopic libvirt-bin/utopic python-spice-client-gtk/utopic spice-client-gtk/utopic
service libvirt-bin restart

I was able to start virt-manager >=1.0 and access the new snapshot features.
However after rebooting I don't have a virbr0 adapter, so my utopic solution is not 100% yet. I think there might be another package I need to upgrade.

Hi, I think this seems possible for Ubuntu backports.
Can you follow the process here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBackports and do the initial testing to ensure this backport works for others.

Thanks!

I've gone ahead and uploaded test packages to my PPA, ppa:micahg/ppa. Please follow the testing instructions in the description so we can get the uploaded to trusty-backports.

Hi I just want to confirm that I managed to get the utopic virt-manager etc running on my system without any problems. I needed to add the following packages: virtinst/utopic ebtables/utopic to make libvirtd start properly and able to create virbr0.

I'll try out the backport soon. Just at work right now.

Wow an update on a long forgotten bug.
In the spirit of the bug (newer virt stack backported) but in 2021 I wanted to FYI about https://launchpad.net/~canonical-server/+archive/ubuntu/server-backports which provides just that for the LTS releases.
