Open opens an empty document

Bug Description
The filename
Research Statment - CS.txt
causes an open document to be opened instead of the document itself. The issue is with gnome-open, which returns
malformed file name or URI.
Changing the name to ResearchStatmen
Oddly, spaces are fine in other filenames...
