Bug Description

Using fully updated Dapper Beta.

This bug occurs when one is typing a name into the "To" field in the Compose window.

I often have alternative email addresses against people (for their work address etc.). Currently, if I only have one Lucy in my address book and I type that in then only the primary email address appears; there is no list to choose the alternative email from.

The unusual thing to me is that if it is Lucy Smith and I have a Bob Smith as well, I can type in smith and it will display both records *and the alternative email addresses for both*!

If there is only one match from the address book for what has been typed but that match has an alternative email against them, then the drop-down list should appear with the choices. Obviously the primary should be at the top of that list and defaulted to.

The summary needs to be changed to something like: "Can not compose message to
second address in AB from AB".

i would like to see a per-address card option like "always send mail to all of
this contact's addresses"... a global switch wouldn't be as useful i think but
could be implemented (i forsee too many cluttered inboxes if this is a global
option). i currently have to make lists for some of my multiple-email contacts
to make sure they see the things i send.

You *can* compose mail to the additional email address from the Address Book.
Simply click on the "Additional Email" link in the Card pane. WFM

What you *cannot* do is select additional email addresses from the *Contacts*
pane in the Compose window, which is what Bug 258792 is about.

So, close this one and reopen Bug 258792 ?

Nope, that one was duped to this one.

Actually I would like to use my contact bar after writing the message.
Thus a right-clik on the contact name should for exemple provide me with his different emails.
Or could something like a "browsing view" be created ? clik on the name and the available alternate emails unfold. Maybe as an extension ?

If you have more than one match for each name then it shows both primary and alternate email addresses for each person, if you have one match for a name then the drop down list doesn't appear so you only get their primary address.

The upstream bug seems to be different because of the summary, and that people are talking about different things inside the bug, but mozilla #258792 was closed as a duplicate of it.

Nominating wanted-thunderbird3 to keep it on the radar, though this would probably not make TB3, but there's some work on future Address Book interactions that might improve this UI.
