Bug Description
I started using Terminator and I love it. Thanks for the great work!
I am moving from a setup where I was using ion3/notion as my window manager. The only feature ion3 had that I am missing is having multiple tabs inside a sub-window (this is in addition and unrelated to the "top level" tabs). Say we start with a terminal and we split it horizontally. The bottom half of the screen contains a terminal. It would be wonderful if (perhaps while this terminal is running a slow command) I could start another terminal in this bottom half (without splitting the area again) and be able to switch between them. The title bar of that split would show multiple "tabs" for each terminal in that area.
Here is a picture of ion3: https:/
Notice the multiple tabs in each split.
I realize this is not a simple feature but it would be great if you could keep it in mind in the longer term. Thank you!
Once upon a time Terminator did in fact have tabs within a split terminal. It was removed for various reasons, mainly I think because it became very confusing, the additional code complexity, and it was just not widely enough used to be worth it. (This was long before I took over as maintainer.)
I don't think this is something enough people would want. Note that you can open multiple windows, each of which can have it's own set of tabs. Admittedly it won't be neatly tiled by default, but then if you want tiled windows... :-)
I'll mark this as Wishlist/Won't Fix, as it doesn't fit in with the project plan, but if there was a great swarm of interest, or someone came up with really elegant patches that didn't make the more basic use case more complicated, then I would reconsider.
