GTK_IM_MODULE=setsid did not work for me but removing all env vars but DISPLAY and PATH did work so I tried all and I finally found the faulty env var for me: DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS.

I got terminator to work using this command line:

DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS='' terminator
