Messages update is slow when opening a chat

Bug Description
When opening a chat, messages are shown after ~4s. Same thing happens when the app is left in background with a chat opened.
Scrolling is also quite laggy, but I don't know if it's related.
On Android messages are shown instantaneously, can this be because ubuntu touch does not allow apps to process in background?
I am on nexus 4 OTA-13.
