Bug Description

SInce update to 2.0 I cannot delete chat history. I click clear history, but once I tap on the contact again the history is there.
Individual messages can be deleted successfully. If I delete history via desktop application it clears on the desktop, but history on the phone remains so its definitely a problem on the phone client.

Where are the chat logs located so I can delete them manually until a solution for this issue is found. Thank you.

BQ Aquaris E4.5 updated to OTA-8 and Telegram version is 2.0.4.0

It takes a moment to clear history, especially if here's a lot. I just tried reproducing the problem, and could not (it successfully cleared history, and even removed the dialog).

Please swipe from the left, and use the right icon (circle with cross). Once done, give it a brief moment - the dialog should go away. I also clicked on the contact (from the Menu > Contacts page), and the history was not there any more.

Telegram stores it's data under ~/.config/com.ubuntu.telegram/<full phone number>/database.db
Unless you decide to remove this file (in which case it'd be better if you nuked whole ~/.config/com.ubuntu.telegram), there's no easy way to selectively remove the chat history (unless you know SQL, SQLite and you know what you're doing).

Doesnt work for me and I tried multiple times, but I found out something new, I managed to clear history for two contacts, but for two other contacts clearing history doesnt work at all no matter how many times I try. I will delete the whole Telegram directory and clear them all, then recheck deleting history after some time, maybe database on my phone is glitchy or something.

Now this is strange, I deleted ~/.config/com.ubuntu.telegram, reactivated my account but those two chats are still there.
Deleting them from the application still doesnt work, rebooting and trying again didnt help either. Deleting Telegram directory should have deleted them, but for some reason it didnt.

Are these secret chats or regular chats?

Regular chats. Should I try reinstalling Telegram?

Removing Telegram's cache doesn't remove the chats from the server. If removing the chats doesn't work, please e-mail me the log file from under ~/.cache/upstart/*telegram*2.0.4*.log to michal.karnicki at canonical dot com. You can sign in to web.telegram.org to remove those chats if the app fails to do so, but the log file would definitely help me understand the source of the problem.

PS Reinstalling Telegram will not help (neither clear app's data/cache).

I have untrusted-helper-push-xxxxxx-telegram_push.2.0.4.0.log in there, is that it?

Revision history for this message
Michał Karnicki (karni) wrote :

Nope, these are for the push helper. If you actually run the app at least once since last phone was turned on, you should have another file, like application-click-com.ubuntu.telegram*2.0.4*.log

I ran it more than once and there are no such logs there :( But I am afraid that deleting Telegram directory messed something up badly, I am not getting any Telegram notifications whatsoever (all are turned on in Telegram and System Settings), messages are coming when I open a chat but no visual (led) or sound notifications that I received any messages, it is like they never happened.

SB (emehntehtt) wrote :

Any ideas how to fix these notifications or diagnose the issue? I presume a factory reset would fix it but I would like to avoid it if possible.

Factory reset would really be overdoing it ;)

If in doubt,
rm -rf .config/com.ubuntu.telegram
rm -rf .cache/com.ubuntu.telegram
ensure you have Ubuntu One account in phone settings set-up
open Telegram, sign in, you should have notifications. if you have an U1 account, and it still pops the dialog about 'Notifications' with the first button being 'Sign in to Ubuntu One', you're hitting a bug I just discovered. This dialog should not show up at all, assuming the push client properly generates a push token :/

I did the rm -rf of both folders, checked Ubuntu One and I was signed in already, opened Telegram and logged in but still no notifications :(

In notifications, you'll find a 'Notifications' setting, but you won't be able to enable it. I will file a related bug.. (and let you know, so you can sign up for updates)

SB (emehntehtt) wrote :

I can enable or disable notifications in System Settings-Notifications and in Telegram itself, but it changes nothing. Or you mean some other notification settings somewhere else? Notifications in the taskbar menu that is pulled down doesnt have a toggle of any kind. What is strange this worked today, but after I deleted ~/.config/com.ubuntu.telegram it seems it killed something. Okay thanks I will sign up for that new bug you will open.

Here's the bug. Perhaps this doesn't affect you in that case.. If the notification toggle is on in Telegram settings, you should indeed receive notifications.

There's a bug filed for slow notifications though, here:

Thanks I will check those bugs, unfortunately I think I will have to do a factory reset to get notifications back as nothing seems to help to get them back. All toggles are turned on and I still get nothing.

I got a little hasty and I did a factory reset, I thought it would help but it didnt, still no notifications, but at least now we know for sure factory reset doesnt help :)) I will see if anything changes in the morning.

I will but I discovered another problem, after factory reset I found out half of my contacts werent properly synced and didnt appear in the Contacts, I need to check on Gmail if they are there, but this is getting really frustrating...

I'm really sorry for the experience, but please let's keep this bug report on track (for clearing history).

Just FYI - if something went wrong, I believe you can recover all your contacts from a copy that Google makes for you regularly. So in the event something went wrong, do not worry.

I will check Google when I get on my computer, I hope you are right :) I also hope this issue with notifications can be troubleshooted somehow.

I think this might be traced to Telegram servers or relay routes, I recently experimented with Android on my E4.5 to compare with Ubuntu (been using Ubuntu since I got my E4.5 after one of the flash sales), Android experience was scary after Ubuntu and so I reflashed the phone with OTA-10.1, the chats I cant delete were BACK which means they were downloaded from servers, other chats were not back, again I cant delete those chats, but I can delete other chats, same as before, that means those chats are stored somewhere and Telegram cant delete them.
