Bug Description

I am reporting this as a bug because I feel that it is a critical issue.

I am in the situation of having multiple documents in a folder of varying types. I quite often have duplicate documents in odt, pdf and ms doc format with identical filenames apart from the extension. I find it very difficult when I open a folder and all the documents use the same icon, I need to read the name of every document to find the one I need. I should be able to open the folder and immediately recognise all the ms excel documents and only have to scan these for the document I need.

I perceive this as a serious usability issue which is relatively easily correctable. There are currently very few complete icon themes available, the only ones I have found are the OSX theme, the Slick theme and NuoveXT themes which have very easily discernible mimetype icons. Perhaps in the short term we could use the mime icons from one of these themes.

I have the same issue on Hardy, I have generic text icons for *.iso files
Also I can't see text preview in text files (it is active in nautilus pref's and works with Tangerine,Human,Gnome etc... icons).

I don't think Tango - or hicolor - has mimetypes specific to .doc and .odt .

If you're talking about a generic "text" icon do this to clear up your local mimetype cache:
rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/mime/*
sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime/
gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Human/
